‘Zootopia’ And ‘Kubo And The Two Strings’ Lead The 2016 Annie Awards Nominees

This is a unique year for animated films at the Oscars, as a staggering 27 movies are battling it out for those five spots. To put that in perspective, 16 films were contenders for the final nominations last year.

In news that shouldn’t shock anyone at all, the critically acclaimed and massively successful Zootopia led the pack with 11 nominations. But it’s the runner-up that provides the pleasant surprise: Laika’s stop-motion animated Kubo and the Two Strings, one of the best movies of the year, earned 10 nods.

Before you wonder if the billion dollars Zootopia made worldwide helped it snag so many nominations, look to Pixar’s Finding Dory, which did nearly identical business but only earned three nods. Even with Pixar having something of an off-year, Disney still ruled the awards, with Moana scoring another six nominations for the company.

Studio Ghibli’s The Red Turtle also earned its fair share of love, earning five nominations, making it an easy frontrunner in the Best Animated Feature – Independent category. Much larger movies trailed that nearly dialogue-free art film, with Kung Fu Panda 3 and Trolls earning four nominations each while The Secret Life of Pets only received two nods. Despite a much-pubclicized awards push, Sausage Party only earned one nomination.

You can find the complete list of nominees below or at the office Annie Awards site.
