‘Deadpool 2’ Casts Japanese Actress Shioli Kutsuna In Mystery Role — Who Could She Be Playing?

But the studio is being tight-lipped on who she’ll be playing, though they confirm that Kutsuna will have a “key role” in Deadpool 2, according to Deadline.

Kutsuna has appeared in mostly Japanese films and television shows, though she recently acted in an indie film called Oh Lucy! co-starring Josh Hartnett. She is best known for starring in live-action manga adaptions, with films like Beck, and an adaptation of the manga Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed) called Shinichi Kudo’s Written Challenge. Back in my j-drama days, I watched the live-action Detective Conan and it was predictably ridiculous.

On one hand, it would be just up Deadpool’s alley to set the sequel in Japan to mirror and mock the setting of the second Wolverine solo movie. On the other hand, it’s pretty tired to do yet another movie in Japan with flat, stereotypical supporting characters.

There’s an unfortunately small pool of lesser-known Asian mutants, much less Japanese mutants. But the first Deadpool reveled in bringing to life obscure mutant characters who wouldn’t get a chance to shine in the main X-Men movies. Again, since I’m not well versed in mutant lore, I’m going off the Comic Vine list of Asian Marvel superheroes and listing some Japanese mutants who have yet to appear on the big screen:

I might be going the wrong route entirely and assuming that Kutsuna will be playing a mutant. In a cast filled out by Josh Brolin as Cable, Zazie Beetz as Domino, and Jack Kesy as a mystery villain, as well as returnees Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Stefan Kapacic (Colossus) and Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), it may be one mutant too many. We’ll have to see when Deadpool 2 comes out.
